Positioned in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, Italy also
borders France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia, and also surrounds the
enclaves of San Marino and Vatican City. Along with its largely Mediterranean
climate, Italy benefits from the stunning scenery of the Alps and lakes in the
north, and 7,600 kilometres of coastline facing the Tyrrhenian, Ionian and
Adriatic seas.
Italy has a rich and varied culture, and is known among
other things for its history, art and food. The country is home to more UNESCO
World Heritage Sites than any other in the world, including popular tourist
destinations like the archaeological site of Pompeii, and the Amalfi Coast. Approximately
61 million people live in Italy, 2.7 million of which live in the capital city
of Rome. A further
1.3 million reside in Milan,
with other notable cities including Naples, Turin, Florence and Venice.
Needless to say, this generates demand for a considerable amount of
international post, keeping our couriers busy with hundreds of parcels every
week.

Shipping Restrictions
It's important to know what you can and cannot send between
the UK and Italy to ensure your parcel is not intercepted and delayed by
customs officials at either end. Italian legislation is particularly stringent.
We have listed some of the common prohibitions below, and if you are unsure
about any goods in your consignment, you may contact our Customer Service Team for
advice.
It is typical for certain items to be denied access into a
country via its postal system. For example, you will not be able to send
flammable items like aerosols, varnishes and any kind of explosives. Currency,
precious metals and stones, and tobacco products of any kind are also
prohibited, and any parcel containing these will be subject to seizure and
forfeiture.
It is not permitted for many edible products to enter the
country, including meat, fish, dairy produce, honey and any other animal
products. Fruit and nuts, sugar confectionary, oils and fats are also not
allowed to be posted into Italy.
More unique to Italy is the prohibition of transporting
clocks, typewriter ribbons or any toy that is not made from wood. Your parcel
will also be intercepted if it contains sewn articles of any kind, including
hats and footwear. There are restrictions on ceramic and glassware products,
artificial flowers and albums of any kind - stamp collections, postcard books
and photo folders included.
The complexities of the Italian customs make it doubly
important that you check the contents of your packages carefully, and ensure
your addressee has any necessary documentation to receive the package, before
you send it.
